2004 Mercury 115 Hp Optimax Two Stroke Outboard Review

  1. Default Mercury 115 hp - Optimax two stroke - demand feedback please

Hi to all 'tooners waiting for good weather:

I can't assist but find that a few of you in the forums list a Mercury two stroke on your various pontoons/tritoons. I've owned numerous Merc 2 strokes over the years, mostly carbureted ii - 3 - four cylinders etc. and never had whatever major bug.

I currently own a 2001 Merc Carb 90 3 cyl on my 18ft. Bay boat and dearest it. Withal, my existent question is nigh the Optimax 115 hp I have on our newly acquired 2005 22' Tiptop Tritoon with this 2005 Merc 3 cylinder Direct Fuel Injected, (DFI) engine.

I hear all sorts of stories, good & bad about the DFI Opti's so I idea I'd see which forum members have one of these Opti's and specifically the 115. If then, what experience you have had with it.

We bought our latest boat in Oct of 2013 and oasis't had the gamble to use information technology yet - still too cold and the water is low. I hear the fuel econmy is good and the engine is quick with the correct prop - I also hear that at that place were numerous problems with the Opti's but I'm non certain which years and which horsepower ranges were/are affected.

Can y'all update me with your cognition please?

    Thanks much

Just came back on the forum after a few years absent-minded, see this is a new forum and mostley new folks. To answer your question, nosotros bought a new '08 Bennington 2275FSI and Everyone said to install a four stroke Yamaha. Well I didn't want a 4 stroke anything, I wanted a 175 Pro Xs Merc so thats what we bought, installed it on a CMC hyd. jack plated and oasis't had the to the lowest degree bit of trouble with information technology. This thing will practice 45 mph with the Bimini upwards and total line-fishing gear, sips fuel and no fume whatsoever. Besides that I dear the "growl" the Merc makes when you go on it.....great engine.

The biggest trouble they have had with the Mercs was coils in the 225/250 ProXs models, I think they have gotten information technology fixed and it was a supplier problem anyway which actually doesn't thing when you're stuck out in the eye of a lake somewhere. Install the biggest cold crank battery and keep it charged all the time with a "Bombardment Tender" or onboard charger and you'll exist proficient to get. Have fun with it.....Dave

I haven't heard any bad things about the smaller HP Opti'due south. Accept heard about numerous compressor failures on before certain larger models though. I wouldn't exist afraid to own a 115 at all. But I do like my four stroke alot

I've talked to a few gunkhole mechanics & all of them said they wouldn't have a 4-stroke engine on their gunkhole. (I was wanting better mileage) A mechanic recommended the Optimax if I were to buy a new ane (I was wanting a 150hp) every bit those engines are more than efficient than the older two-strokes, probably because they're injected. Keep in mind though that his gunkhole shop/shop sold those engines also. I've been happy with my onetime 2-stroke 115 Merc, although terminal year my oil pump started not working, but merely sometimes (It's gonna be replaced pretty shortly). So once more, the engine is 20 years sometime.

I'g curious equally to why your mechanic'southward said they wouldn't have a four stroke on their boat. Reliability, weight, Etc.??

ii-strokes hit peak ability quicker & having fewer parts are more reliable.

I'm a two stroke fan for the reasons belercous listed, plus they are lighter and require no maintenance. My 60 HP limit boat would exist amend powered IMO by a 60 ETEC than a 60 BG Fourstroke. I also heard the same stories Rick heard about early bigger Opti'due south merely I think the bug are straightened out on the newer mid range models like the 115.

I have a question about DI two strokes, since the fuiel mix doesn't fog the crankcase like in carburated models, how does a DI 2 stroke lubricate the crankcase parts?

I'chiliad non very familiar with DI 2-strokes, but from what I've gathered the oil is injected onto the bearings & cylinder walls. Since gasoline isn't constantly washing over the bearings the oil injected there isn't much. That oil mixes with the crankcase air & gets burned along with the fuel/air mixture. Because this configuration doesn't require as much oil, information technology runs cleaner than a normal 2-stroke, although not as make clean every bit a 4-stroke design. .

Thank you to all who responded to my feedback request on the Optimax DFI ii strokes from Mercury.
We are but getting ready to de-winterize her and launch later on this month.
Hither's hoping all the skillful luck follows when nosotros go in the h2o.
I'll update the forum every bit to the results.
    Thanks again

  10. Default optimax 115

Had an optimax for seven years, however the other day it was curt on ability out of the pigsty and wouldn't keep plane. After some brusque trouble shooting found out one of the 3 coils was bad. Later numerous calls to 17 dissimilar mercury dealers within 300 miles and three states, information technology sat for the weekend considering NO 1 had the parts available, and merely ane usually had them on hand but was sold out. This is not some special coil it is on all 115 hp mercury optimax or otherwise. Buy a spare, keep it with ur plugs, might salvage your weekend.
